Health And Nutrition Secrets Revealed – Steaming Your Meals Is The Healthy Way To A Successful Diet

December 28th, 2011 by admin

Anyone whose ever tried to cook a decent meal, and get everything right knows how hard it can be. In fact it can seem darn right impossible at times. But let’s face it, if you’re not a professional cook or chef then you can’t really expect to have a professionally cooked meal, or can you?

With all of the different cooking networks and shows out there, it’s hard to watch without wishing that you could re-create the meals that they make at home, but the truth is that you either attempt and it doesn’t work out, or you don’t even attempt because you’re afraid that it won’t turn out well.

One of the biggest problems is that the tools that you have to work with in your kitchen, and the tools that the professionals that you’re trying to emulate use are probably like night and day. They have all of the best equipment there is to work with, and frankly that’s one of the reasons there’s turns out so much better. Chances are that if they had to use your old banged up pots and pans there stuff wouldn’t turn out nearly as perfect as it does. The tools and utensils are a huge part of their success.

One of the most famous chef’s in the world has recognized this fact and therefore has done his best to try to make great cooking tools available to you. Emeril Lagasse is a world renowned chef and restaurateur, made mostly famous from his cooking shows on the Food Network “Essence of Emeril” and “Emeril Live”. He started out working in a bakery as a boy, discovered his talent, and went on to go to Johnson and Wales Culinary School and graduated in 1978. He quickly rose up the ladder of the cooking world, becoming Executive Chef of Commander Palace in New Orleans. Proving himself as a Creole and Cajun expert he went on to open his own restaurant in New Orleans called Emeril’s. He now owns ten restaurants and has a multimillion dollar empire.

So, in case you were wondering, I think it’s safe to say that Emeril Lagasse knows what he’s talking about – and furthermore – what you need in your kitchen to produce superior food at home. Emerils latest invention that’s going to help you “kick it up a notch” is the Emeril Steamer from T-Fal. You probably know that T-Fal makes some of the best, if not the best non-stick surface pans in the world, so you know that with the expertise of these two giants combining forces the Emeril Steamer has to be exceptional, and it is!

The Emeril Steamer basically makes cooking for your family about as easy as it gets. The Steamer has 3 completely separate compartments for food so that you can create a dinner for your family without all of the food running and leaking together. You can tell that Emeril created his Steamer so that it’s as easy as possible to use. Essentially, you fill the water compartment, add your food to the three large food baskets, hit a button and “Bam” you’ve got dinner going (pun intended).

To top it off, the steamer cooks food quickly so that it’s not an all day project for making dinner. Once you hit the steam button you’re off and the turbo speed steaming has begun. There’s a reversible non-stick drip tray where all three compartments drip separately ensuring that all of your food has its own separate natural taste.

Another beauty of the Emeril Steamer is that if you need to add an ingredient all is not lost once you’ve hit the button. You can simply hit the button, shut of the steam, add your ingredients, and start it back up again without any problems.

Now a lot of people have a problem when cooking large meals because they’re not able to get the timing right, and therefore will end up with one thing finished and having to sit, waiting for the rest of the meal. That’s not a worry with the steamer because everything is cooking at the same time, and you can add as you go so if you’ve got meat for instance that needs to cook a bit longer, you can go ahead and cook that and add the veggies later and your fine.

Steaming is great way to eat healthy while at the same time keeping the food tasting great, locking the natural flavors in – and the Emeril Steamer will let you do exactly that. If you’re ready to make dinner easily and quickly without all of the fuss and mess, then The Emeril Steamer cannot be recommend enough.

Craniosacral Therapy – Description and Benefits

December 23rd, 2011 by admin

Craniosacral therapy (CST) was developed about 30 years ago by John Upledger, DO. Dr. Upledger originally studied the practice of cranial osteopathy, which was devised by William Sutherland, DO in the early twentieth century, but adapted it based on his own research and personal observation during his career as an osteopathic physician.

Craniosacral therapy is based on several theories. The first of these is that the bones of the skull do not fuse completely in early childhood as is usually believed. Also, in his early career Dr. Upledger observed, while assisting during a surgical procedure, that the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord – the meninges – actually move rhythmically. At first it was thought that this rhythm was due to the heartbeat, but Dr. Upledger discovered that the rhythm of the meninges is a different pattern from that of the heartbeat.

Craniosacral therapists are taught to detect and evaluate the movement of the meninges by just holding the head and the base of the spine – the sacrum – very still and focusing on what they feel with their fingers and hand. After the evaluation, it is possible to very slowly and gently “adjust” the bones of the skull, so that the cerebrospinal fluid – the fluid lining the brain and spinal cord – can flow more naturally.

Craniosacral therapy is used for a wide range of symptoms, including neck and low back pain, chronic fatigue, temporomandibular joint syndrome, fibromyalgia and even emotional issues like depression and anxiety. It is especially good for chronic conditions that may have a neurological component, like coordination problems, hyperactivity and learning disorders. It has even been used to treat autism; Dr. Upledger has found that the meninges of most autistic children are unusually tight and that it is possible to loosen them during a CST treatment.

Craniosacral therapy is performed with the client lying on a treatment table while the therapist holds the head and/or the sacrum. The therapist’s hands then move slightly as they do the needed adjusting. It may not feel like much is happening during the treatment; the therapist needs to maintain their concentration, so they don’t talk much and the client, because they are not moving much themselves, may fall asleep. The effects are subtle and it can take a lot of sensitivity to notice them at first.

And what are the effects? To begin with, the client may notice that they are calmer and can concentrate more easily. Their posture or coordination may improve and they may have less pain; perhaps that nagging headache they’ve had is now gone. Or maybe they feel more optimistic about life in general. The issues in their life that have been a source of anxiety no longer seem so challenging – or hard to get over. (Because it has such a wide range of benefits, CST can be used in conjunction with other therapies, including emotional treatment.)

Craniosacral therapy can help people of all ages, from infants to elders. About the only time it is definitely not recommended is when there is a high-risk condition located in or affecting the brain or spinal cord, like an aneurysm or intracranial hemorrhage. The craniosacral therapist will obtain a medical history and may consult with a physician or other practitioner before doing a treatment.

Craniosacral therapy can be practiced by massage therapists, but it is not massage. It can be done by osteopathic physicians, but it’s not an osteopathic adjustment. It takes special training to do this sort of work. But many people – practitioners and clients alike – swear by it and would never try anything else.

Lasik Chicago – Longest Experience Of Mid East

December 20th, 2011 by admin

Lasik, now is, not a word that needs any introduction. It has been a renowned name which has world wide acceptance. Many of the laser centers are opened world wide. Lasik Orange country, Lasik Denver, Lasik Dallas and so on, the list is endless. Lasik Chicago is another laser (laser in-situ keratiomileusis) center that has the longest experience of dealing in laser eye treatments in whole of the Midwest.

Apart from laser vision correction, eye care centers also offer the expertise in cataract corrections. The highly skilled cataract surgeons offer the latest non stitch cataract surgery including both monofocal and multifocal lens implants. The monofocal lens implants refers to the treatment of the distance imperfections whereas, multifocal lens implants are done for both, distance and near vision. Apart from cataract, it also offers myopic retinal degeneration. The latest lens implants known as ReSTOR and Crystal lens implants free from Bifocals are an added feature of this lasik eye institute.

Retina surgery, diabetic eye disease, glaucoma treatments and comprehensive eye exams are few other fields in which this laser centre excels. Its not only the treatments that this center excels in, rather it provides a whole lot of range of consultancy facilities to the aspiring candidates for laser eye treatments. Patients can also go for no-cost consultancy from centers like lasik Chicago.

But before going for actual surgery a candidate must always go for a consultancy so as to have details about what exactly he is being into. The pre-surgery tests, post surgery precautions, cost of surgery, impact of treatment and the risks involved are important queries to be worked on. As such, there are few painless tests before the actual surgery to determine the level of imperfections. Post surgery precautions include resistance from water, no eye strains and few eye drops. The cost of surgery varies from center to center and ranges from 1000$ to 1500$ per eye treatment. The impact and the risks involved must be well studied. However, there is a meager amount of risks with lasik procedure due to high range of technologies available and the longest experience in laser procedures. Still, prevention is better than cure. Hence, doctor’s directions must be followed well.

TV in Kids’ Rooms Leads to Obesity

December 19th, 2011 by admin

There used to be a day when households were lucky to have one television set. Now we often see TVs in every room of the house. Many kids don’t just feel lucky if they have a television in their bedrooms, they expect it.

But studies show that a TV in a child’s bedroom is detrimental to their health . Children ages one to five watch nearly five more hours of TV and videos each week if there’s a television in their room.

Of those surveyed in the study, 40 percent viewed TV in their rooms, raising their risk of being overweight by one-third. With both younger and older children, the increase in television watching also led to an increase in BMI rates .

To counteract the risk of obesity, parents are encouraged to designate the child’s bedroom for sleeping and play time only. Use their room to build their health by doing kids exercises or playing games that will improve intellect and gross motor skills.

Only allow children to watch television in the family room, where programs and time spent in front of the TV can be monitored. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children’s total media viewing time be limited to one or two hours per day.

While the television does act as a good babysitter when parents need to get things done around the house, there are many other ways to keep kids busy and entertained. Parents should not let their children become couch potatoes.

Kids activities other than the television such as kids exercise can stimulate creativity, imagination and a healthy future , all things a parent wants for their child.

Bronchitis Home Remedies and Bronchitis Chinese Medicine

December 19th, 2011 by admin

Homeopathy

Attack the hack. For a dry, hacking cough, Aconitum is among the best homeopathic medicines, according to homeopath Dana Ullman. Others that work well include Antimonium tartaricum, Bryonia, Drosera, Phosphorus, and Spongia. Which of these medicines a homeopath prescribes depends on your unique symptoms.

Chinese Medicine

Silence the Wind. Chinese medicine views bronchitis as an invasion of Wind, according to Efrem Korngold, O.M.D., L.Ac. Sometimes the condition is brought on by Wind Cold, which produces a dry cough and whitish mucus. For this type of bronchitis, Dr. Korngold might prescribe ginger. Then there’s Wind Heat bronchitis, which is characterized by a thick yellow-green mucus. This type responds well to prescription herbal formulas containing fritillaria bulb and tricosanthis fruit, he says.

Consult an acupuncturist. The United Nations World Health Organization includes bronchitis in its list of conditions treatable with acupuncture. When treating bronchitis, acupuncturists use Lung 5, which is located inside your elbow, on the upper part of the crease. They also use Lung 6, which is high on the thickest part of the forearm. You can try stimulating these points yourself with acupressure. Using your fingertips, apply steady, penetrating pressure to each point for 3 minutes.

Home Remedies

Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids?six to eight 8-ounce glasses a day, Dr. Pizzorno advises. Fluids help liquefy bronchial secretions, making them easier to cough up. Most people with bronchitis find warm fluids more soothing than cold.

If it’s dry, humidify. Dry air is irritating and can trigger coughing fits. “At night, run a vaporizer while you sleep,” Dr. Simons suggests. During the day, take hot, steamy showers.

Suck on candy. Hard candies help soothe your throat, which in turn helps relieve bronchial irritation, Dr. Brauer says. Use sugarless candies to avoid tooth decay.

Protect your airways. Avoid cigarette smoke, dust, chemical vapors, and other respiratory irritants, Dr. Brauer says.

Over-The-Counter Drugs

Choose a cough medicine. For a dry cough, try an over-the-counter cough suppressant that contains dextromethorphan, Dr. Simons suggests. Both Triaminic DM and Dimetapp DM have dextromethorphan as their active ingredient. But don’t use these products if you’re bringing up mucus. In that case, you should use an expectorant made with guaifenesin, such as Congestac.

Other Good Choices

Visualization

Breathe in, breathe out. Coughing that you’re unable to control makes you anxious. This leads to shallow breathing, which in turn triggers even more coughing.

The following visualization exercise, recommended by Gerald N. Epstein, M.D., director of the Academy of Integrative Medicine and Mental Imagery in New York City, relieves anxiety and restores normal breathing. Practice it for a minute or two every few hours.

Close your eyes and focus on your breathing, telling yourself that you can get rid of anything that interferes with your normal breathing. Then open your eyes.

Close your eyes again and take three breaths. If you cough, just accept it and keep breathing. Open your eyes.

Close your eyes again and take three breaths. Focus on how your breathing is changing, deepening. Open your eyes.

Repeat the above steps, this time focusing on breathing from your diaphragm rather than from your upper chest.

Aromatherapy

Get a whiff of relief. Herbalist/aromatherapist Kathy Keville, coauthor of Aromatherapy: A Complete Guide to the Healing Art, recommends the following essential oils for bronchitis: clove bud, fir (including balsam and pine), ravensara, and sweet inula. Add 3 to 5 drops of the essential oil of your choice to a bowl of hot water and inhale deeply. Or add 3 to 15 drops to a comfortably hot bath and step in for a soothing soak. Avoid using clove in the bath, as it may irritate your skin.

Naturopathy

Make your own cough syrup. Place six chopped white onions in a double boiler. Add 1/2 cup of honey. Slowly simmer this mixture for 2 hours to draw out the onion juice, then strain out the remaining onion material. Take 1 to 2 warm tablespoonfuls of the honey-onion juice mixture every hour or two, Dr. Pizzorno says.

Get plastered. Did your grandmother believe in mustard plasters? Naturopaths still do. Here’s Dr. Pizzorno’s recipe: Mix 2 tablespoons of dry black or brown mustard with 6 tablespoons of flour. Add enough water to make a paste. Spread the paste on a cloth, then lay the cloth over your chest. Inhale the vapors for no more than 20 minutes. After that, be sure to remove the plaster. If you leave it on your chest too long, you could develop blisters.

Medical Measures

A study conducted by Ralph Gonzalez, M.D., of the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, found that doctors prescribe antibiotics to two-thirds of the people whom they treat for bronchitis. But more than 90 percent of all cases of bronchitis result from viral infections, and antibiotics can’t kill viruses. These drugs are effective only against bacteria, which cause comparatively few cases of bronchitis.

“Before prescribing antibiotics, your doctor should take a sputum culture to make sure that you really have a bacterial infection,” Dr. Brauer says. If the test comes out positive-that is, you do have bronchitis-causing bacteria in your system-then antibiotics are appropriate.

In that case, there’s something that you can do to increase the effectiveness of any antibiotics you’re given: Pair them with bromelain, says Alan Gaby, M.D. An enzyme found in pineapple, bromelain helps antibiotics get into your cells. He suggests either eating more pineapple or taking a 250-milligram bromelain supplement with your antibiotics.

Red Flags

Consult your doctor immediately if you have bronchitis and you develop a fever or you start coughing up bloody, brown, or greenish yellow phlegm. You may have pneumonia, which requires prompt professional treatment.

Yes, Lasers Can Treat Cataracts Now!

December 19th, 2011 by admin

Do you know how cataracts are treated? Whether cataracts are extracted, liquefied or zapped with a beam of radiation, cataract surgery is one of the safest procedures available with a high rate of success. However, with a new paradigm of laser techniques, surgeons may soon need to think twice about performing surgery.

It is true that the advent of femtosecond lasers has brought a new level of accuracy, consistency and safety to critical areas of cataract surgery. Yet, recent studies showed that laser photolysis with femtosecond surgery can postpone cataract surgery by bleaching the lenses.

Yes, you’ve heard me right. It is not the same procedure experts do with bleaching of teeth, hair, skin and clothes. In cataracts, the lenses are bleached with light. Photobleaching involves using a pulsed laser in the infrared spectrum to bleach the chromophores (molecules that absorb light) that accumulate in the natural human lens. By bringing back the transparency of age-induced yellow lenses through photobleaching, the need for cataract surgery can potentially be postponed in 3 to 7 years.

In fact, by incorporating the concept of photobleaching in cataract management, millions of visually impaired people, —particularly in developing countries where surgery is not available—, can be saved. Furthermore, experts regard photobleaching as a possible tool to control cataract formation until IOL implantation is necessary.

Nevertheless, further research is needed to determine the influence of photobleaching on the refractive index of the lenses and whether it can create irregular astigmatism. The future calls for broader ideas that will improve the way surgeons manage cataracts today, and eliminate surgery tomorrow if possible.

Kids Exercise Affects Grades

December 14th, 2011 by admin

“You can’t play until you’ve finished your homework.”

This typical mom-phrase used for generations may no longer be considered good parenting. Kids exercise is now not only proven to improve a child’s health, both now and in the future, but it also stimulates their mind and could guarantee better grades in school.

James Pivarnik, president-elect of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and a professor of kinesiology at Michigan State University in East Lansing, took part in a study that determined a link between kids exercise and kids’ academic successes. Studying middle-school students, results showed that those who partook in exercise did better scholastically.

The study examined 317 students and found that the kids in the best athletic shape scored nearly 30 percent higher than kids in the worst shape. Even those with a minimal amount of exercise scored better than those with little or no exercise in their daily routine.

“It’s not only Johnny’s getting fat, and heart disease down the road – all that’s true. But it’s also that he might not do as well in school,” says Pivarnik.

The best type of exercise for kids is free play. Organized sports do not always lead to results, as they usually only benefit those kids who are already in shape, while the less-fit kids sit on the sideline or don’t make the cut. But, non-competitive exercise, such as playing on a jungle gym, is the most effective in boosting any child’s health and cognitive thinking.

Just a little daily extra-curricular activity will help energize a child’s body and stimulate his mind in preparation for homework. So, if you know your child’s not getting adequate exercise at school, make sure he gets it when he comes home … and before he starts his homework.

Colorado Medical Marijuana Dispensaries

December 6th, 2011 by admin

Colorado citizens voted to pass Amendment 20 in 2000 opening the door for an influx of new legal medical marijuana dispensaries. Over the past several years, the Colorado medical marijuana industry has become the fastest growing industry in the state. It was reported in 2010 that the number of Denver dispensaries has grown to outnumber the number of Starbucks in the city.

With this overwhelming number of new cannabis dispensaries opening across the state, it’s hard to know where to start. So if you have your Colorado medical marijuana registry card and you’re wondering how to find the best Colorado dispensaries, then keep reading for some handy tips…

The first step in locating a new medical marijuana dispensary is to identify all the dispensaries that are in close proximity to your location. Google maps is a great tool for this task because it will actually overlay location markers if you do a search for something like “Denver Dispensary”.

Once you have a list of a few dispensaries in your area, you can start researching each by doing another Google search for their specific name and keywords. So search for something like “Denver dispensary review” or just “the best Denver dispensaries” and you should get you the appropriate results. I recommend using the research from these results to further refine your list down to about 3 of the more interesting dispensaries.

You’ve done the proper research and read the reviews, now it’s time to visit these top 3 medical marijuana dispensaries to see for yourself. One thing to keep in mind is that since this market is still so young there really isn’t an industry standard when it comes to how individual Colorado cannabis dispensaries operate. What this means for your is that every Colorado dispensary that you visit will be a unique experience!

While most Colorado medicinal marijuana dispensaries do not require appointments to access the medicine viewing rooms, it’s probably a good idea to call ahead and see if there is going to be a wait to be seen. When making your personal assessment of a new Colorado cannabis dispensary, there are a few things you will want to pay close attention to on your initial visit.

Your first impression will usually be the waiting room area where you will need to provide your Colorado medical marijuana registry card to the person at the counter. After that, you will either be immediately taken to the bud room or you will have to wait until your called back. Wait times are generally very short, often only taking a few minutes. I’ve found many Denver dispensaries have no wait at all during none peak times.

The most important part of evaluating a new medical marijuana dispensary in Colorado is your experience in the bud viewing room. For many people, their first time walking into this room can be overwhelming. With row after row of glass jars packed with the finest Colorado grown medicinal cannabis, patients just don’t know where to begin.

Well, here’s my tips for dealing with this initial experience. Start with the best. Ask to see the A grade, top shelf, red dot or whatever they call their best cannabis strains. This will immediately give you an idea of the best that they have to offer. Also, don’t overlook the lower grades of bud…sometimes you can find the best value for your dollar here.

Also be sure to take note of their pricing structure. This can be a major determining factor when choosing a primary caregiver for the long run. Most Denver dispensaries offer separate pricing structures for members and nonmembers, so be sure to ask each for specific details.

After visiting a few places you will start to see how the general decor and atmosphere of Colorado cannabis dispensaries can widely vary place to place. Some dispensaries present a stark clinical environment that’s similar to a doctor’s office while others will feel more like you’re walking into a friend’s comfortable house. Whatever your preference, there’s a Colorado medical marijuana dispensary that’s right for you.

This article is not an endorsement for marijuana use. Cannabis is still a drug but it is extremely helpful in treating many people with various aliments. The medical marijuana world is rapidly changing so I strongly recommend reading the official Rules and Regulations for Medicinal use of Marijuana from the Colorado Department of Health before making any decisions regarding the medicinal use of cannabis. In the end the best decisions are informed decisions, so be sure to do thorough research on any topic involving your health before acting.
