Nursing Schools Benefit From Online Classes in Push For More Students

March 30th, 2011 by admin

Students interested in pursuing campus and online nursing degrees have more options these days of which to choose. Nursing programs throughout the country are expanding and becoming more innovative, flexible and convenient. They’re available at undergraduate and graduate levels and are tailored to those with high school diplomas, as well as undergraduates working toward liberal arts bachelor’s degrees, individuals with nursing backgrounds or bachelor’s degrees in other disciplines.

The Bureau of Labor forecasts that employment growth for registered nurses between 2008 and 2018 is expected to be much faster than the average for all occupations and is to include some 581,500 newly created jobs and hundreds of thousands of replacement jobs. The fastest rate of growth is to be in physician’s offices followed by home healthcare services and then nursing care facilities, according to the Bureau of Labor. Registered nurses with bachelor’s degrees are to have better employment prospects, and those with advanced practice specialties, such as clinical nurse specialists, nurse mid-wives, nurse practitioners and nurse anesthesiologists are to be in high demand particularly in inner cities and rural areas, the Bureau of Labor Statistics notes.

While some, such as Vanderbilt University Medical Center, say the nursing shortage in many parts of the country has eased, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that employers in some parts of the country and some employment settings have cited a difficulty in attracting and retaining an adequate number of registered nurses – primarily because of an aging registered nurse workforce and a lack of young workers who can fill positions. The Tri-Council for Nursing recently encouraged nurses to recognize entry level nursing trends and advance their careers. Urgent needs exist in occupations such as nurse educators, as well as Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, the Tri-Council suggested.

A shortage of nurse educators, according to what Mountain State University Orlando Executive Director Randy White reportedly told the Orlando Business Journal, hasn’t been addressed nearly as much as a nursing shortage itself. Mountain State University itself has added a new master’s degree program with a concentration in education, the Orlando Business Journal article noted. In New Mexico, ITT Technical Institute in Albuquerque is one of at least six institutions to have recently added new programs in nursing, according to a May article in New Mexico Business Weekly.

The new ITT Tech nursing program, for one, is an associate’s degree program where some non-core courses might be taken exclusively in class, exclusively as distance learning courses, or through combination distance learning and in-classroom instruction, the ITT Tech website shows. At Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., the School of Nursing webpage shows that it offers an accelerated masters degree program where students can spend blocks of time on campus and receive instruction via distance learning. Regis University in Denver, Colorado, provides undergraduate and graduate offerings whereby students can participate in courses online or on campus.

Regis University also offers a CHOICE (Connecting Health Occupations with Innovative Curriculum and Experience) bachelor of science in nursing where students attend classes on campus twice weekly during evenings and participate in clinical experiences during weekends. Vanderbilt University’s nursing school also has arrangements with colleges and universities throughout the country where students can combine a liberal arts degree with studies toward a masters in nursing. Regis University is also one of some 230 institutions throughout the country that provide accelerated bachelor’s in nursing programs for individuals who hold bachelor’s degrees in other disciplines.

Regis University, along with institutions such as Creighton University in Nebraska and Quinnipiac University in Connecticut as part of these accelerated nursing programs allows non-nursing bachelor’s degree holders the opportunity to earn a bachelor’s in nursing in a matter of 12 months. Accelerated nursing programs such as these typically include intense, full-time instruction where there are no breaks between sessions, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing notes. Students in second-degree bachelor’s-level nursing programs typically don’t have to take liberal arts courses, according to the association. Quinnipiac University’s accelerated nursing program, for example, concentrates only on nursing courses.

10 Best Things About Breast Augmentation

March 29th, 2011 by admin

Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures on the market today. Its popularity is for good reason as it has a lot going for it. Her are 10 of the best things about the operation affectionately referred to as the boob job.

1) Breast augmentation is more permanent than other fixes. Fat transfer may provide fullness for a while but the chest may flatten out again as the adipose is reabsorbed by the body.
2) Better than a padded bra because implants won’t slip around in clothing or be removed when it’s time to go to bed. A woman wants her full cleavage to accompany her at all times.
3) Having a fuller, larger bosom will make the hips and waist appear slimmer. A woman with smaller breasts may look hippy or thick-waisted when in reality, smaller boobs make her appear that way.
4) Clothes fit better with an ample bustline. Sweaters hug more attractively, blouses are filled out in a feminine way and tank tops look great, too. Dressy gowns are all the more alluring when a bit of cleavage peaks out. Without a generous bosom, clothing can look frumpy and unattractive.
5) Bathing suits look much better when the breasts are good sized. The rest of the body will appear slimmer in comparison. Besides, all eyes will be on the attractive bustline and figure problems in the lower portion of the body won’t even be noticed.
6) Nursing a baby and pregnancy can stretch and flatten the skin in the bosom. A woman may have had nice breasts before childbearing but may wind up with unattractive saggy pouches. Breast augmentation can fill them out again making the mother feel younger in age.
7) Men like bigger breasts. Let’s face it; more male heads will turn after implants have been inserted to bump up the bust size. Whether a woman is in the market for a date or not, it boosts the confidence to see the men turn to look.
8) Self confidence increases. The way a person feels about his or her appearance has a big impact on self confidence. If a woman likes the way she looks, she will begin to take more risks in terms of job and school and become more successful in her life.
9) Youthful appearance is enhanced. A telltale sign of an aging body on a woman is a saggy chest. Augmentation will plump up an older woman’s bustline, making her appear more youthful.
10) Look better naked. Implants are placed below the skin via incisions in the nipple region, below the breast crease, in the armpit or navel. The result is a natural looking, curvy nude body. No worry about falsies falling off or a dream date learning about your flat chest after you’ve removed your clothes.

The Dangers of Drinking Every Day

March 24th, 2011 by admin

Studies have shown that drinking red wine can be beneficial for an individual’s health. These health benefits come from an antioxidant called resveratrol that comes from the skin of red grapes. Antioxidants like resveratrol are believed to promote good health, can have anti-aging effects, and help build a healthy heart. However, that is not all red wine is believed to do for personal health. Some scientists believe it also reduces personal risk for ovarian cancer, stroke and kidney stones and can also reduce the risk for heart disease because it contains an element that helps reduce the amount of LDL cholesterol that your body produces. Some studies point to the country of France as a good example – wine is very popular there and the country also has a low incidence of heart attacks.

Further, new research is also suggesting that white wine may be beneficial to individual health. Consuming red and/or white wines has now been linked to increased life expectancy – in some cases by as much as 5 years. These studies have only linked wine to these health benefits, however. There is no research to suggest that drinking beer or hard alcohol on a regular basis can be beneficial to personal health.

When incorporated with a balanced and healthy diet, drinking wine in moderation will benefit your health. They key word there is moderation. Most men should limit themselves to no more than two glasses of wine every day and women should stop after one glass. (a glass of wine is defined as about 5 ounces). Notice how this is not an “average” of one to two glasses a day. Do not think you can drink 10 glasses of wine in one day and avoid it for the rest of the week and have everything even out over time. That is not how it works. The health benefits are eliminated if and when you consume more than you should.

You should also try to remain alcohol free for a few days every week. Drinking occasionally, in moderation, might be “good” for you, but you should avoid drinking every day “for the sake of your health.” This can lead to other dangers, such as alcoholism, and can create problems with drinking and driving, which is never a good idea.

Also be aware that a regular drink or two can become a problem. The people that stagger out of bars and stumble home every night are not the only ones with drinking problems. While having a drink or two in the evenings can be good for your health, you also need to be sure that you do not overdo things. Drinking every night, even in moderation, can create dependency problems in some people and can lead to more alcohol consumption (more than 1 or 2 drinks) very easily. Being intoxicated can lead to things like drunk driving, DUI arrests, and other problems that may lead to a need for a DUI lawyer. Additionally, be aware that you can be arrested for driving while impaired in some places, even if you are under the legal limit, which also requires a DUI attorney for assistance with the case. So, if you do decide to take advantage of the health benefits that can be obtained from drinking red and white wine, make sure you do so responsible.

The Cost of Liposuction Procedures

March 22nd, 2011 by admin

The price of liposuction will vary from state to state and from physician to physician. Although cost is surely a crucial factor in determining whether or not to have the surgery performed, several steps should be taken prior to obtaining a price quote from a surgeon. As a general estimate, last year, liposuction costs ranged from $1,000 – $10,000. Prices can vary largely depending on how much fat is to be removed and which areas of the body the surgery is targeting. Many cosmetic surgeons have pricing guides that may give a prospective patient a general idea of liposuction costs.

Firstly, the American Association of Plastic Surgeons (AAPS) recommends that a prospective patient thoroughly interview several surgeons and ask key questions before deciding on a doctor. The patient should inquire about the physician’s educational background and work experience. The surgeon should have graduated from an accredited medical school, have at least two years of residency in a cosmetic surgery setting and be a member of the AAPS. Most reputable cosmetic surgeons will also welcome a patient’s request for references. Carefully choosing an experienced cosmetic surgeon can greatly affect the outcome of the liposuction surgery.

After careful research, the patient will need to attend an in-depth consultation or counseling session with the chosen surgeon. This is when the surgeon will be able to give pricing information. The cost of the procedure is mostly determined by the area which will be treated and how much fat will be removed during the surgery. Many other factors are included in the cost of the procedure, however, such as anesthetics, facility fees, liposuction compression garments, bloodwork, and laboratory testing. Some surgeons may also recommend additional treatments such as ultrasounds or massages which should be taken into consideration in estimating the cost of the liposuction surgery. Another factor that influences the cost is how the surgeon ‘counts’ different areas of the body. For example, many surgeons consider the upper and lower abdomen to be separate areas.

As with other cosmetic surgeries, unless it is considered reconstructive surgery due to illness or injury, insurance companies will not generally cover the costs. In most cases it is possible to arrange with the doctor to have a smaller area treated to save on costs. Many refer to this as the “pay-as-you-go method,” which allows those with budget concerns to have a cost-effective option. Financing is another option, but because costs can become very high in the long run, it is usually not recommended. Many surgeons inform patients that using a credit card or cash advance may be less expensive than financing through the doctor’s office. Though cost is an important factor, finding a good cosmetic surgeon who is willing to work with you within your means while performing at the highest standards should be at the top of a patient’s priorities; this will influence the satisfaction one gains from the overall experience.

10 Coping Strategies for Dealing With Chronic Illness

March 22nd, 2011 by admin

1) Surround yourself with positive energy as much as possible. If you are seeing a doctor who thinks that you will never be cured or who is generally negative about your prospects of increasing health, find someone new. Find practitioners who believe in you and your healing. Create a network of different practitioners from all realms, Western Medicine, Alternative Medicine, Massage Therapists and Mental Health Workers.

2) Join a support group. You can do this in person and these days there are many online forums and support groups for both general autoimmune conditions and chronic illnesses and as well as groups that are more specific to certain conditions. Make sure that the group is actually supportive. How do you know? Trust your gut, you should feel better after you interact in these groups. You should feel that your feelings and your experiences are being validated.

3) Continue to seek out resources as much as your health allows. Many of these will be resources in your local community and many will be resources in the online community. Don’t give up. Find ways to keep your body, your mind, and your spirit moving in the direction of healing.

4) Remember the difference between pain and suffering. There is physical pain that is real and then there is the suffering that we add to this pain with our thoughts. Notice how in moments of distraction or in moments of focusing on something outside of yourself you might feel some relief from your symptoms. Even if it is for 5 minutes or for 30 seconds, try to allow yourself to receive the nourishment of these moments.

5) Breathe deeply. Take five full belly breaths. Place your right hand over your abdomen and your left hand over the middle of your chest and inhale for a count of five and exhale to a count of five. Make sure you exhale completely and pause before beginning the next exhale. Notice even subtle changes in the quality of your mind and body.

6) Practice Creative Visualizations and Guided Imagery. The most basic method of guided imagery is to focus on the area of discomfort or illness in your body. Create a picture of this area in your mind, use your imagination. The image does not have to be anatomically correct. In fact, the more creative you can be the better. Once you have this image in your mind try to notice other aspects of the area, is it hot or cold, rough or smooth, does it have a color associated with it? A smell? A taste? As you are becoming aware of these aspects begin to ask this part of you and the related imagery how it can move or change to create relief. Notice if the image, color, texture or any aspect of the image begins to change. Practice this guided imagery for up to 30 minutes at a time. Many people also find it very useful to do this exercise for shorter intervals throughout the day. There are many free resources for these practices online. There are additional resources in your local library and bookstores and also many practitioners who can support you in learning more about these tools.

7) Make time to be out in nature. Talk a walk. Step outside. Sit on the grass. If none of these are possible, bring nature to you. Buy plants and flowers. Create an atmosphere of vitality in whatever spaces you occupy. Learn about Feng Shui. Very often the spaces in which we live and work in contain stagnant energy that can be mirrored in the personal spaces of our bodies. See what you can let go of in your physical life that might make room for new energy, for healing.

8) Reflect on your relationships. Make decisions to be around family and friends who can be with you in a nonjudgmental way during your tough times. Again, create a support network so that you never feel that you are overwhelming any one person or burdening them in any way. You deserve connection and support.

9) Keep a journal. This does not have to be a formal diary. Create collages, make pictures that make sense to only you, write about what you are feeling. Collect quotes that feel inspirational or copy passages from books that have helped you through difficult times. Basically, this is a place for you to express whatever you want without having to worry about any ramifications. It is your book of healing.

10) Be grateful. One of the most difficult things to do when we are in the midst of illness, discomfort, or pain, is to see all the good in our lives. Keep it simple. You can be grateful for the bed that you can sometimes rest in. You can be grateful for the food you can eat, even if it is severely limited by your condition. You can be grateful to your animal friends, a piece of music, the leaves changing in the fall, the feel of the sun on your face. Let this grateful feeling move through your whole body. Every time you have a grateful thought and related feeling of gratitude you are giving your body relief from illness.

Importance of Intelligence For an Expat in Malta

March 21st, 2011 by admin

There are many factors influencing the life of an expat, no matter the country where she is established. From initial funding, specialization, country of origin and the country itself, all these have their contribution to the over-all state of the expat. Yet, it seems that intelligence is a key factor, i.e. is one of the factors the can make up for lacking qualities.

Malta is a republic consisting of seven islands located in the Mediterranean Sea. Its capital city is Valletta and the official languages are Maltese and English. Roman Catholic is the main and dominant religion today, due to the historic biblical shipwreck of St. Paul on the island.

One of the most flourishing domains of the island are the health-care and the education. Given these, the proper education of an expat is ultimate in ease of job finding, stable employment and general well-being. Also the great culture and antique traditions prevail and nourish the community.

Thus, education and intelligence of an expat in Malta consist a key factor for her success both in career and social life. Also intelligence is after all a key factor anywhere in the world and in any domain. An intelligent expat being able to find with ease available jobs and pass over the major difficulties that may be encountered in Malta.

Yet, due the relative reduced dimensions of Malta, both geographically and demographically, it is not the easiest place to be for a local or an expat. With a surface of no more than 316 km2 and a population of mere 400 000 people, physical resources lack and job availability is reduced. But, this once more encourages the need for intelligence, as a small country is usually in need of intellectual labour rather the physical one.

Considering all these aspects, intelligence is definitely a key factor for the well-being of an expat in Malta.

How Opera’s Diet in 2009 Helps Both Women and Men Lose 1 Pound a Day

March 21st, 2011 by admin

Call it a marketing ploy or just dropping out of a routinely healthy diet, or both, but what is clear is that Oprah’s diet plan is back on and this time with a new venture. Oprah’s dieting plan is made up of a number methods which most dietitians today will argue are the most effective.

These include moderate daily exercise, a diet plan which has been marketed heavily on her website and the Acai Berry product, the diet supplement juice which Oprah claims are the foundations to losing 1lb a day. Acai Berry is the interesting part of Oprah’s diet plan as the Acai diet is relatively new to the weight loss market.

The pulp of the nutritious berry is made up of supposedly powerful antioxidants which are suggested to help reduce your appetite and cleanse your system. The berries are also purported to purify your system from free radicals which store your fat.

Also, this miniature Amazonian purple fruit recently discovered in Latin America is said to naturally raise your metabolism so as to burn your fat on a regular basis. This would suggest that if you consume these berries on a regular basis you will naturally burn twice the amount of calories you normally would.

And the Acai Berry company? also claim that whilst you take this natural weight loss supplement the ingredients are naturally strengthening your heart as well as helping to clear your digestive disorders. It’s reported that many thousands are now taking this “rainforest berry” with intriguing results so the 1lb a day claim may hold some weight.

Private Jet Charter to Vail – How to Rent Your Own Jet to the Slopes of the Rocky Mountains

March 19th, 2011 by admin

You can’t beat the beautiful Rocky Mountains in Colorado for great snow skiing, hiking and outdoor adventure. And with all the cozy resorts that have such wonderful dining and lodging, it’s easy to see why a place like Vail is such a popular destination in the winter months.

According to the airport operators at Vail’s nearby Eagle Airport, the most popular time of year to spend time in Vail is during Christmas holiday season and the week after Valentines Day. Kids are off school and families head to the slopes to have some winter fun. Most of these travelers choose to fly on the airlines, however some decide to charter their own private jet so that they can bypass the potential delays in and out of Denver International Airport and skip the oftentimes scary winter driving conditions on Interstate 70.

People are often surprised how easy it is to rent a jet to Vail, and even more surprised at how reasonable the cost is. Oftentimes, people just aren’t aware of how easy it is to do it.

One way to find a charter outfit to fly you to Vail is to call up your local airport and track down an FAA certified operator. Once you’ve found them, give them the details of your trip and request they send you their best quote to perform this flight. Within a few hours, they’ll have a quote to you, giving you a pretty accurate expectation of what the flight will cost.

Another option is to use a charter broker to find you the right airplane. A broker already has the in-depth knowledge of the charter industry and will know immediately what type of aircraft you’ll need to perform your trip. For instance, if there are only four people going on this trip, there’s no need to charter a jet that has eight seats. Or, if the trip length is anything over 300-400 miles, a turboprop airplane will likely end up costing you more than a jet. The broker will be able to track down the right airplane from a qualified charter operator and negotiate a good rate on your behalf. In the end, with the exception of a few circumstances, it should save you money to use a broker when arranging a charter flight and it will make the whole process a lot easier.

When a charter operator quotes the cost to do the trip, they base their calculations on the hourly retail cost to fly their airplane. They then add other costs on top of the hourly rate, such as a fuel surcharge fee, landing fees, parking fees, crew charges and a 7.5% federal excise tax. All of these charges are included in your retail charter quote. However, unplanned costs that may be incurred along the way aren’t included and will be billed to you after the completion of the flight. Examples of these costs include possible air traffic delays, unplanned change in routing because of poor weather and other fees for airport services that may be required such as deicing the airplane or putting the aircraft in a hangar to avoid impending weather. Pilots will try to avoid these costs in order to keep the service as reasonable as possible for you, however in order to complete a flight safely, they may have to use these services like these and the operator will pass these costs onto you.

Most modern private jets are able to go nonstop from anywhere in the country to any of the Colorado ski towns and should be able to complete the leg to Vail without refueling. A flight from Teterboro, NJ, an airport on the outskirts of New York City, to Vail should take anywhere from four to five hours, depending on the aircraft flown. To get to Vail from anywhere on the West Coast should be under three hours. There are exceptions, though, depending on factors such as the total number of passengers going, the winds aloft on the day of travel and the weather conditions forecast for your arrival time. Some operators will have to make a fuel stop along the way in order to have adequate reserve fuel in case of a change of plans.

Upon arriving in Vail, your crew will taxi up to Vail Valley Jet Center, a jet service center known for their excellent customer service, as well as the giant grand piano in the lobby. Even though this business has a monopoly on jet traffic coming in and out of Eagle, they’re known to be very helpful and friendly to their clients. If you’ve arranged for ground transportation to pick you up at the airport, this is where they’ll find you. If for some reason you don’t have transportation lined up in advance, the staff at the jet center will arrange for transportation on your behalf.

Depending on the length of your stay and your agreement with the charter operator, your flight crew will either remain in town until your departure date. If your flight was booked and charged as a one-way flight, they’ll likely have the airplane serviced and refueled, then be on their way back to their home base. And by the way, alhough it certainly isn’t expected, pilots and cabin crew always appreciate a thoughtful tip.

Your broker or the charter operator themselves can help take care of all the additional details of your stay. If you need help with reservations at hotels or restaurants, most brokers and operators will do all they can help you and may even have special connections established with local businesses already. Make sure to let them know ahead of time if you need any assistance with extra details.

As a side note, the benefit of flying into Vail’s Eagle airport as compared to Aspen is that it is less restricted and enjoys better weather due to its unique location and altitude. Because of the nearby mountainous terrain that surrounds Aspen, charter operators must adhere to certain procedures that limit their access at night or during times of poor weather. In addition, the available parking space at Aspen is fairly limited and during popular times of the year, it may require that charter crews simply drop off their passengers and fly to Eagle to park the airplane. From a client’s perspective, if their final destination is Aspen, it’s much more convenient to fly into Aspen Pitkin Airport than to fly into Eagle.

During the ski season when jet traffic in and out of Vail, Aspen and Garfield is especially busy, your charter operator will have to schedule a “slot,” essentially a reservation to land at the airport. These slots are subject to availability and issued on a first come, first serve basis. That’s why if you absolutely have to be in Vail at a specific time, make sure to plan your charter as far in advance as possible.

If you would like to charter a jet to Vail, there are several resources to learn more specifics about the charter process. National Business Aircraft Association provides plenty of useful information that will help you prepare for a trip.
