Everybody in the US knows that it is a challenge to find affordable health insurance, but some areas are more expensive then others. According the Center for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS), Colorado is one of the most expensive states to buy health care in. Insurance companies use the cost of health care as a factor when they set premiums. And that same study by CMS also reports that health costs, and premium rates, are increasing every year.
Of course, health insurance companies will vary premiums by zip code too. So a person in Denver may not pay the same amount as a person in a rural area. Companies look at the amount of claims, and of course, the average cost of those claims, when they decide how to set rates for an area.
Of course, premiums that individuals pay vary by many factors. An applicant’s age and general health matter a lot. Poor health habits, like smoking or a weight outside of normal limits, will usually cause people to pay more. On the other hand, good health habits can earn a discount from many insurers. And of course, if the premium for a plan with a $1,000 deductible is just too expensive, it may be time to consider a $2,500, or even a $5,000 deductible. Also beware of paying for coverage that you do not need. A middle aged couple, or a single man, for instance, probably do not need maternity coverage. On the other hand, a family with young children will probably want to be sure that accidents are fully covered.
Finding affordable health insurance is a balance between staying within a budget and buying adequate coverage. Poor coverage will not save you money in the long run, but a plan you have to cancel because it is too expensive to afford will not help you either. You should start by comparing medical plans in your area. Look for accurate quotes and an outline of coverage so you can begin to decide how much, and what kind, of medical coverage you can pay for.

Toenail fungus a very ugly fungi that affects almost 25 million persons around America. The toenail fungus causes the toenail to be very hard and thick and turn yellow. If you’ve a fungus infection and you are thinking about different treatments, there are a few things to consider.
There’s no flawless fix for toenail fungus. There are some oral medicines for toenail infection, like Lamisil, and these are said to treat the infection about 10 percent of the time. A new recent treatment for this fungus is the use of lasers. So far there were a few studies that show very promising conclusions. These lasers work from killing the fungus but also leaving the nail and other foot tissues un-damaged. Many big companies are looking to get in on the action.
How exactly do the lasers work? These lasers are aimed at the fungus in the toenail that basically vaporizes it while leaving your skin unharmed.
Does it work? Around first clinic studies earlier this year, almost 90 percent of the patients were able to grow out a regular appearing nail after just one laser treatment. After that treatment, the toenail should grow usually in one year if there’s a healthy bed to do so. The success rate here is similar to the oral fungal pill.
Is the laser treatment Agonizing? Is it Safe? The laser has absolutely no affect on regular and healthy skin tissue, there’s no pain. The studies taken so far show absolutely no side effects from taking the laser treatment to get rid of the fungus.
How long will it take? Only ten minutes are needed for treatment, per toe.
So… how safe is it? There are absolutely no health or age restrictions. In recent clinical studies there were no bad reactions, harm, ailments or side effects. As you might know, the ability to use the medication accessible today for treatment carries with it the possibility of kidney failure, lasers don’t.
Will my insurance cover it? The laser treatment of for toenail fungus isn’t covered by most insurance companies or plans as it’s thought of as aesthetic. The cost can be anywhere from $200 to $500.
It’s credited to your operation fee if you want to go forward with treatment. The treatment is usually a fee of $50. If your infection is resistant or if it is not responding to regular toenail growth, the nails might need the next laser treatment therapy. This sometimes happens when all of your toenails are extremely infected. You may need additional treatments in this case.
If the toenail lasers, which did recently finish small clinical trials really work, they will show a recent way to cure toenail infections by killing the fungi while keeping the toe whole and healthy.
Currently, there’s no sure fix. The fungus are so smart that popular fungus pills, which move the risk of liver cause injury to, are totally successful under 50 percent of the time. And medications that you physically put on your toes work less than 10 percent of the time.
Drug companies like Schering-Plough are working on recent pills and ointments and lotions to fight the toenail fungus.

Denver is plagued with many animal control problems. The recent problem with squirrels having bubonic plague is only one of them. Plague is an ancient disease and occurs in irregular cycles in many parts of the world including the United States.
What do you do if you have a sick squirrel on your property?
Do not attempt to capture the animal. Plague is transmitted by flea bites and any contact with wildlife may transfer the fleas to you.
The first call should be to a wildlife professional that is trained to remove the animal. If the animal appears lethargic, sluggish or just is not acting right, it may need to be taken to a Health Department for testing.
Distemper is another common disease that infects raccoons in Denver, Aurora, Lakewood, Golden and other cities in the Denver Metro area.
Symptoms of distemper are a goopy discharge from the eyes, the eyes sunken into the head, a sluggish or drunken appearance while walking and disorientation. The animal is usually not aggressive; it just appears “out of it”.
A wildlife professional has the proper equipment and training to safely and effectively handle any potentially diseased animal. Distemper is not transmittable to humans, but your pets can acquire the disease. Make sure they are protected from the disease through vaccination from your Veterinarian.
Prevention is the key to stop animals from living in your home. Take a look at the outside of the home and make sure that vents are screened, rooflines sealed and chimneys capped.
Colorado is host to many wildlife diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Lime Disease, Hantavirus, Distemper and Rabies. By protecting your property from infestation, you will prevent most wildlife occurrences.
If you suspect your home has been invaded by unwanted guests, have a Wildlife Professional inspect it as soon as possible.

The news that health clinics at six Denver schools are considering distributing birth control to students will no doubt be a source of controversy, no matter how you feel about the issue. The fact is that teen pregnancy is a real issue in Denver schools and we should applaud measures that will deal with it head on.
Denver Schools Should Not Teach Morals
The role of educators at Denver schools is not to attempt to teach the students morals. That responsibility lies with the students’ parents. Instead, Denver schools can teach students to consider the consequences of their actions in all aspects of their lives, including decisions they are making concerning whether or when to become sexually active.
Critics of the proposed plan to offer birth control in Denver schools’ health clinics state that offering these products will only encourage students to have sex. The fact is that curiosity about sexuality is a normal reaction as young people go through adolescence, whether they receive information about birth control or not. Trying to ignore the issue doesn’t make it go away.
The fact is that students attending Denver schools can and do have sex. Let’s accept that fact and give them the information they need if they decide to go ahead and be intimate with someone else. The rate of teen pregnancy needs to be brought down; girls who are unable to complete their education are more likely to be facing a future on social benefits or in low-paying jobs. That ends up affecting all of us.
Health Clinics at Denver Schools Should Meet Students’ Needs
The role of the health clinics at Denver schools should be prepared to meet the needs of the people they serve. In this case, the students need to be able to receive counseling and birth control. This is a health issue; not a morality issue
Students attending Denver schools may not be able to discuss dating, birth control, and sexuality issues with their parents. They need a safe place to go where they can get this much-needed information in a supportive, nonjudgmental atmosphere. Healthcare workers can educate students about the possible consequences of becoming sexually active at an early age and it is certainly possible that armed with this information, some students may choose to delay it. Those who decide to go ahead will be better able to practice safer sex strategies, because someone took the time to explain to them exactly what this means.
When health clinics at Denver schools are at the point where they are seeing girls who are requesting pregnancy tests on a regular basis that is truly a cause for concern. Let’s give these health clinics the ability to provide for their clients properly and allow them to dispense birth control at Denver schools.

The National Council on Aging (NCOA) is an organization whose goal is to improve the lives of seniors through education, intervention, and resources. The NCOA is also an excellent resource for statistics regarding the health of older Americans. The following information can be also be found on the NCOA’s website, ncoa.org.
Disease
A chronic disease is one that is long lasting or reoccurs in the same patient; examples include heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and cancer. Approximately 80% of seniors have at least one chronic disease, and 50% are dealing with at least two. The National Governors Association states that 75% of the national money spent on health care is used for chronic diseases. Diabetes is becoming a huge problem with seniors, with 23% suffering from the disease and an additional large population at risk of developing diabetes. Lifestyle intervention in the form of nutrition and exercise can be successful at preventing this disease.
A whopping 90% of seniors have developed hypertension or are at risk of developing hypertension. This type of high blood pressure can lead to complications such as heart attack and heart failure.
Physical Safety
Falling is especially hazardous for seniors. They are prone to fracturing bones because of age and deterioration. At least one third of all seniors will experience a fall that is severe enough to require hospitalization.
Mental Health
As many as one in four older Americans suffer from some type of mental health issue. The most common are depression, anxiety, and dementia. These and many other issues can be addressed through a quality home care provider.
